Manitoba MPI Vehicle Valuation & Appraisal Disputes
Manitoba Public Insurance publishes an independent appraisal route for disputed vehicle values and repair amounts, following review with a claims supervisor.
MPI Provides an Independent Appraisal Procedure
MPI says an insured can first raise the value disagreement with an adjuster’s supervisor. If unresolved, the published independent appraisal process involves a proof-of-loss position, party-appointed appraisers and potentially an umpire. Section 70 of the Automobile Insurance Coverage Regulation provides additional framework.
“both representatives then try to agree on your vehicle’s value or the repairs that are needed.”Manitoba Public Insurance, Appealing a Vehicle Claim
Important distinction: The MPI vehicle appraisal process should not be confused with bodily-injury entitlement appeals or other administrative decisions. MPI separately describes fault-review and driver-premium appeal processes; those are not the same as a vehicle-value appraisal.
How to Review a Disputed Vehicle Valuation in Manitoba
- 01
Discuss the settlement
Review the vehicle’s pre-loss value, repair estimate and any applicable salvage issues with the adjuster or supervisor.
- 02
Set out a proposed settlement
MPI describes completing a proof-of-loss form stating the amount sought.
- 03
Appoint an independent appraiser
After the insurer rejects the proposal, follow MPI’s stated appointment and notification steps.
- 04
Resolve remaining disagreement
The appointed representatives may settle the disputed matters. If they do not, the process can involve an independent umpire.
What Can Strengthen a Valuation Review?
A total-loss assessment may compare the cost to repair, actual cash value and salvage. Review the vehicle market value separately from the insurer’s economic decision to write it off.
- The insurer's complete written offer and market valuation report
- Vehicle identification, exact model and trim, options, kilometres and condition
- Listings or other evidence that genuinely match the subject vehicle
- Documentation of material repairs, upgrades or disputed deductions
Confirm Costs Before Formal Appraisal
MPI says an insured pays their own representative and shares umpire costs. Any figures mentioned in historical MPI brochures should not be treated as a current market quote.
IA Reports can discuss appropriate independent valuation work after confirming assignment scope, availability, authorization and applicable local requirements.
Manitoba Valuation Dispute FAQs
Do I need to go directly to an umpire?
No. MPI describes supervisor review and an opportunity for the two appointed representatives to reach agreement first.
Should I ask for the underlying valuation?
Yes. The report, condition information, equipment and comparable-market basis are useful for a focused disagreement.
What documents should I request before an independent appraisal?
Start with the complete written offer, the underlying vehicle valuation and the evidence supporting the amount in dispute. MPI asks you to speak with a supervisor, then describe a settlement position on its proof-of-loss form before using the independent-appraisal process.
Disagree With Your Vehicle Insurance Settlement?
Request an initial review of a written total-loss valuation, or ask about an independent appraisal for another defined purpose. We will clarify the assignment scope and any fees before engagement.
