Alberta Section 519: Vehicle Insurance Valuation Disputes
A disputed total-loss value in Alberta should begin with a careful review of the insurer’s numbers. Where the parties cannot agree on the amount of an insured loss, Section 519 provides a defined dispute-resolution process.
Section 519 Is a Dispute-Resolution Process, Not a General Coverage Appeal
Alberta explains that Section 519 deals with disagreements about property value, saved property, repairs or the amount of loss or damage. It is not the route for deciding whether a particular loss is covered by the policy.

Important distinction: A claim for coverage, fault or legal liability can require a different procedure. Confirm the type of policy and the precise issue before requesting the Section 519 process.
How to Review a Disputed Vehicle Valuation in Alberta
- 01
Review the written offer
Ask your adjuster for the complete vehicle valuation and explain the specific amount or condition adjustments you dispute.
- 02
Consider a written request
Alberta’s published process calls for proof of loss and a written request when initiating Section 519 dispute resolution.
- 03
Select representatives
Each party appoints a representative. A specialist in vehicle valuation may be useful, but the statute does not require the representative to have the title of appraiser.
- 04
Resolve any remaining difference
The representatives attempt to establish the loss amount. If they cannot agree, an umpire may decide the unresolved issue within the process.
What Can Strengthen a Valuation Review?
In a truck or specialty-vehicle file, inspect body configuration, kilometres, aftermarket equipment and comparable listings rather than assuming a base-trim retail listing settles the market question.
- The insurer's complete written offer and market valuation report
- Vehicle identification, exact model and trim, options, kilometres and condition
- Listings or other evidence that genuinely match the subject vehicle
- Documentation of material repairs, upgrades or disputed deductions
Confirm Costs Before Formal Appraisal
Alberta’s published guidance says each side bears the cost of its representative; parties should establish all anticipated umpire and related expenses before proceeding.

Alberta Valuation Dispute FAQs
Does Section 519 guarantee a higher settlement?
No. It determines eligible disputed amounts through a defined process; the evidence may support or contradict either party’s valuation.
Can I appoint IA Reports?
An appropriate valuation assignment can be discussed, but suitability, authorization, independence and any applicable licensing requirements must be checked before acceptance.
What documents should I request before an independent appraisal?
Start with the complete written offer, the underlying vehicle valuation and the evidence supporting the amount in dispute. Check whether your request concerns the amount of the loss rather than a coverage denial, and review the Section 519 appointment requirements.
Disagree With Your Vehicle Insurance Settlement?
Request an initial review of a written total-loss valuation, or ask about an independent appraisal for another defined purpose. We will clarify the assignment scope and any fees before engagement.
