Travel trailer from the IA Reports recreational vehicle appraisal

The Assignment

IA Reports was retained after the owner questioned whether the insurer's valuation properly reflected the market value of their recreational vehicle.

The Inspection

IA Reports attended the RV at its storage location and documented the unit firsthand. Recreational vehicles can vary considerably in configuration, equipment and condition, so the appraisal required an asset-specific approach rather than a generic vehicle-value estimate.

The Valuation Issue

Relevant factors included the unit's configuration, equipment, condition, age, market availability and the quality of sufficiently comparable RVs available for research.

Evidence Reviewed

  • Subject RV photographs and condition information.
  • Configuration and equipment information.
  • Available insurer valuation material.
  • Comparable recreational-vehicle listings.
  • Differences between the subject unit and available market examples.

Our Appraisal Approach

The insurer's existing valuation was reviewed alongside the subject unit and additional recreational-vehicle market evidence. IA Reports documented the RV, researched relevant comparable units and assessed the differences between those examples and the vehicle being appraised.

The Resolution

The independent appraisal supported a higher market value. Following review of the appraisal evidence, the valuation was revised from $27,230 to $30,000.

What This Case Demonstrates

Recreational vehicles require asset-specific appraisal work. Applying ordinary passenger-vehicle assumptions to an RV or travel trailer may overlook configuration, equipment and other characteristics that influence its market value.

Client-identifying information, readable licence plates and other direct identifiers have been redacted, omitted or generalized. Case details are presented for general educational purposes.

Case-study notice: Results depend on the specific vehicle, available evidence, policy terms, jurisdiction and circumstances. Dollar figures are presented as documented for the individual file and should not be interpreted as a guaranteed settlement increase. Taxes, deductibles, salvage and other settlement components may vary.
