2008 Lexus GX 470 Total-Loss Appraisal
A difficult-to-source V8 SUV where additional comparable research and dealer-supported market evidence helped establish a revised valuation.
Figures are shown as documented in this case. Taxes, deductibles, salvage and other settlement components are not included in an arithmetic comparison unless expressly stated.

The Assignment
The owner of a 2008 Lexus GX 470 contacted IA Reports after questioning whether the insurer's total-loss valuation accurately reflected the market value of the vehicle.
The Vehicle
The V8-powered GX 470 occupies a narrower market than many conventional SUVs. For this assignment, locating vehicles with a similar badge or model year was not enough; the research needed to consider the correct model, configuration, condition and market relevance.
The Valuation Issue
Some of the market evidence available during the valuation process was older or less representative of the subject vehicle. Because sufficiently comparable GX 470 examples were difficult to locate, the appraisal required additional market research.
Evidence Reviewed
- Subject vehicle information and condition evidence.
- Available insurer valuation material.
- Relevant GX 470 market listings.
- Availability and quality of comparable examples.
- Dealer-supported market information where ordinary listing evidence was limited.
Our Appraisal Approach
IA Reports reviewed the subject vehicle and available valuation documentation, then expanded the market research beyond ordinary online listings. Dealer-supported information was obtained to help establish a clearer picture of the replacement market for sufficiently comparable GX 470 examples.
The Resolution
Following review of the independent appraisal and additional market evidence, the vehicle valuation was revised from $12,500 to $21,500. The valuation portion of the assignment was resolved in approximately one week.
IA Reports also helped the owner understand the owner-retained vehicle process. Final approval of any retention arrangement and its terms remains with the insurer.
What This Case Demonstrates
When a vehicle is difficult to replace, the relevance and quality of comparable evidence can matter more than simply having a large number of listings. Scarce vehicles sometimes require additional market research to develop a supportable opinion of value.
