Comparable-Market Evidence

Selecting Comparable Vehicles for an Ontario Total-Loss Claim

Comparable vehicles are a major part of many total-loss valuations, but a comparable is useful only when its similarities and differences are understood. The goal is not to find the highest or lowest asking price; it is to identify evidence that reasonably reflects the subject vehicle's market.

Key point: A strong comparable is similar enough to inform value and documented well enough that another reviewer can verify it.

Core similarity factors

Start with the characteristics buyers use to distinguish one version of a vehicle from another.

  • Same model generation and body style
  • Same or closely related trim
  • Same drivetrain, engine and transmission
  • Similar model year and mileage
  • Comparable equipment and option packages
  • Similar seller type and regional market

Listing quality checks

A listing should be traceable and reasonably available on or near the valuation date.

  • Dealer name or seller identity
  • Location and date captured
  • VIN or stock number where available
  • Clear mileage and trim information
  • No duplicate listing under multiple websites
  • No obvious salvage, damage or data error unless addressed

How differences are handled

Perfect matches are uncommon. Material differences can be analysed or weighted appropriately.

  • Mileage
  • Model year
  • Condition
  • Factory options
  • Drivetrain
  • Seller type and location

A clear four-step approach

01Define the subject

Verify exactly what vehicle is being valued.

02Collect the market

Gather a reasonable pool of relevant listings.

03Screen the evidence

Remove duplicates and weak or misleading vehicles.

04Reconcile

Explain differences and the resulting value conclusion.

Frequently asked questions

Are private-sale vehicles acceptable comparables?

They may provide useful evidence depending on the assignment, but seller type, asking-price behaviour, condition information and verification should be considered.

How far away can a comparable be?

There is no single distance that applies to every vehicle. Rare or specialty vehicles may require broader geographic research.

Should the appraisal use only sold vehicles?

Sold data can be valuable when available and reliable. Active listings can also inform the market, but asking prices are not completed transaction prices.
