Vehicle Owner Guide

Disputing a Total-Loss Valuation Yourself vs. Hiring an Independent Appraiser

A total-loss claim is stressful enough. At the same time you are dealing with transportation, replacement shopping, financing and the insurer, you may also be expected to interpret a technical valuation report and prove why the vehicle is worth more. IA Reports handles the valuation side from A to Z so important issues are less likely to be missed.

Why This Is Harder Than It Looks

A valuation dispute is more than finding a few vehicles online.

Insurer valuation reports can involve vehicle specifications, trim and equipment, mileage, condition, comparable selection, geographic market, listing dates and multiple adjustments. Most owners have never had to analyse one before — and they are trying to learn it while already dealing with the stress of losing a vehicle.

If a material error or supportable market difference is not identified and raised, it may remain reflected in the valuation. When the evidence supports a higher value, overlooking those issues can mean leaving real money on the table.

Every claim is different and no increase is guaranteed. The purpose of an independent appraisal is to identify, document and support the vehicle value the available evidence supports.

Doing It Yourself

What You Have to Take On

  • Obtain and understand the complete insurer valuation report
  • Verify VIN, trim, drivetrain, factory options, packages and mileage
  • Identify specification, condition or valuation errors that may affect value
  • Find genuinely comparable vehicles — not simply similar year/make/model listings
  • Assess mileage, condition, equipment, location and other adjustments
  • Check whether the insurer's comparable vehicles and calculations are reasonable
  • Save listings, photos, invoices, maintenance records and supporting evidence before it disappears
  • Prepare a clear valuation position and explain why your evidence should be considered
  • Respond to questions, counterarguments and follow-up requests from the adjuster
  • Keep following the file while also arranging your replacement vehicle and day-to-day transportation
With IA Reports

We Handle the Valuation Process A–Z

  • Review the insurer's valuation report and current written offer

  • Research the relevant market for stronger, supportable comparable evidence
  • Analyse mileage, condition, equipment and other valuation adjustments
  • Consider available maintenance, repair, upgrade and condition documentation where relevant
  • Prepare a structured independent appraisal with supporting market evidence
  • Present and explain the appraisal position to the adjuster when authorized
  • Respond to valuation questions and support the file through the appraisal/dispute process
  • Keep you updated so you understand what is happening without having to become the appraiser yourself
Commonly Missed

Small valuation issues can add up.

Wrong Vehicle Details

Incorrect trim, drivetrain, options or equipment can change which comparables are appropriate and how the vehicle should be valued.

Weak Comparables

A listing can look similar while differing materially in kilometres, condition, configuration, history, equipment, seller type or market area.

Heavy Adjustments

Mileage, condition and equipment adjustments can have a meaningful effect on the final figure and should be reviewed rather than accepted automatically.

Market Timing & Location

Listings need to make sense for the valuation date and relevant market. Inventory that is too old, too distant or not truly comparable can distort the picture.

Missing Supporting Evidence

Photos, service history, recent work, invoices and vehicle-specific records can matter, but only if the information is organized and presented where relevant.

Calculation & Methodology Issues

Sometimes the concern is not one obvious mistake but several smaller assumptions or adjustments that collectively affect the conclusion.

You Do Not Have to Figure It Out Alone

You stay informed. We do the heavy lifting.

Send us the insurer's valuation and current offer. We will review the file, explain whether there appears to be a supportable valuation issue and, if retained, manage the independent appraisal process from market research through communication with the adjuster.

Complimentary initial review for eligible total-loss files.
